Preparing Your Family For A Pandemic

If you believe everything you read on the internet, you are an idiot.  The information presented here is based on my experience - I have 25,000 clinical hours nursing experience,  5000 hours experience as social worker in clinical settings, three years in US Army (Intelligence and Security Command), ten years operating a small business providing science enrichment programs to schools, and I have engaged in personal research.   Jeff Danglo is not responsible or liable, directly or indirectly, for any damage or loss caused or alleged to be caused by or in connection with the use of any information on this website.   Visit http://cdc.gov/  or http://www.who.int  for up-to-date information, or visit your local library.      Jeff Danglo LPN, LSW  More Info

June 11th, 2009:  World Health Organization declares first 21st century flu pandemic.  This H1N1 is a mild virus, with a relatively low death rate, but in December or January 2010 when colder air improves transmission, possibly 10 - 30 % of your city's population may become sick, or will be caring for family members who may be sick, for some periods.  Will the ER nurses leave their sick children to come to work?   Would you leave your very sick child to come to work?    Will the technician who maintains the satellite for your cell phone service come to work when his wife is sick with H1N1 flu?   NOTE:  If an effective vaccine is developed by October 2009,  and the virus doesn't mutate into a more lethal strain, only mild inconveniences may be experienced.

Prepare for a worst case scenario.   Expect city services to be seriously compromised and hospitals to be overwhelmed for days or possibly weeks at a time.  Be prepared.  Stay inside if you can.  Martial law is certainly a possibility for some cities, for periods of time.   There may be a four to six week wave of infections followed with perhaps another wave a few months later, but not as severe (this is based on the actual experience of the 1918 Spanish Flu Pandemic in the Albany, Troy, Schenectady, NY area).   In Albany in 1918, General Electric and ALCO reported absentee rates as high as fifty percent in some of their departments -  some employees were actually infected, some were caring for family members, and some were reluctant to enter a workplace for fear of exposure to infection.

General Precautions
Everyday actions to stop the spread of viruses.

Install alcohol foam wall units (or hand washing sinks) OUTSIDE OF BUILDING ENTRANCE.   Employees wash hands and /or clean with alcohol before entering, and frequently throughout day.  Wash eyeglasses when you wash hands. Install paper towel holders/ paper towels per 3 individual work areas, one in every separate office room, one in every room of your home.  Keep bottle of disinfectant handy ('409' or 'Lysol', after spraying let disinfectant sit before wiping off) by paper towels.  Encourage ALL employees / family members to occasionally clean office area  phones, doorknobs, coffee pot handle, keyboards, mouse, copy machines, elevator buttons, etc.
Avoid Handshaking:   Shaking hands can be a friendly icebreaker or a potential carrier of a virus.  Try a slight bow, nod of the head, or a thumbs up instead. Be Careful How You Sneeze:   If you don’t have a tissue when you sneeze, don’t sneeze into your hands – sneeze into the crook of your elbow instead.  Clean your hands every time you sneeze.  In central location provide tymponic (ear) Thermometer (their fast) & mouth thermometers.  Elevated temperatures are a sign of infection and easy to monitor. If someone feels "under the weather" they can check themselves and consult with a supervisor.   Teaching.
Teach all population, from 3rd graders up, all adults, how to care for someone with respiratory illness: More Provide N95 face masks: Employees with coughs may wear a mask out of respect for co-workers. NOTE: N95 face masks greatly reduce, not completely reduce,  risk of infection. More Info

Extreme Precautions

BE AGGRESSIVE - KILL THE VIRUS BEFORE IT CAN HARM YOU  -  USE SPRAY DISINFECTANT & THOROUGHLY CLEAN YOUR ENVIRONMENT THREE TIMES A DAY DURING HIGH RISK PERIODS.     USE ESSENTIAL OILS.      WASH HANDS / ALWAYS CARRY ALCOHOL GEL.     PLAN FOR LOSS OF CELL PHONE SERVICES AND PROVIDE ALL FAMILY MEMBERS WITH FAMILY RADIO SERVICE RADIOS (range 1 - 3 miles).

N95 mask required for anyone with cough in a public space (Police carry boxes of masks in police vehicles for public distribution).  Hand washing required before entering office, frequently, and at designated times.  Shaking hands is forbidden. If available, have the anti-virals Tamiflu and Amantadine on hand and take BOTH within 48 hours of showing flu symptoms.

Before entering office, temperatures are monitored (temp taken by another employee,  no one takes their own).  Those with elevated temperatures above 100.00º do not enter until medically cleared. NOTE: Before exhibiting symptoms such as an elevated temperature, infected people can still spread the virus. Also, even when not at work, self monitor own temperature every 4 - 6 hours, carry digital ear/mouth thermometer on person / purse / backpack.  MORE

If a virus gets through your defenses and into your office or home, and then gets through your second set of defenses and enters your respiratory tract, you have one last weapon - Essential Oils.  Scientific and anecdotal evidence for the effectiveness of essential oils against viruses has steadily accumulated:  More Info

Every four to six hours use aerosol disinfectant (such as Lysol) in office air, spray area thoroughly - clear room, spray & allow to sit for a couple of minutes, all staff returns with paper towels and wipes area clean (total time: under 10 minutes).  Buy Air Purifiers.

State/City Officials: During the worst periods use sprayers, instead of pesticide, disperse general disinfectant around city once per day - considering the benefits, minor respiratory distress caused by disinfectants in less than 10% of the population may be tolerated, as well as minor environmental damage. Note: natural, biodegradable, 'green' disinfectants are available.  Disinfectant will be constantly apparent in your activities of daily living for months & months.

Viruses can be picked up from the ground. Before entering office / building, all employees dip bottom of shoes in shallow pans of diluted bleach - one part bleach, 4 parts water.  "lasagna pans" can be used. Carry alcohol gel hand cleaner (they're sold in very small bottles for convenience) & N95 mask on person at all times.

Strong immune systems require proper amounts of sleep so eliminate some activities in favor of a good night's rest.  Take naps.

Maintain 4 - 5 block neighborhood volunteer fire brigade.  If firemen are sick, and a house is burning in your neighborhood, be prepared.  Neighbors agree on emergency signal, when called at any time (yell, "fire" as loud as you can), quickly bring your fire extinguishers (and if you don't have a couple of fire extinguishers, buy them immediately). Pool money and purchase commercial extinguisher (about $200), store in backyard of a neighborhood house, accessible to all neighbors. Establish communications with alternative medical contact (MD, nurse, EMT), preferably in neighborhood, for assistance/advice by phone.

Dietary supplements which may support immune function: CLICK HERE     In case of limited access to health care,  neighbors must organize - one day one family cooks one meal for group, one takes child care for day, one performs scheduled lung work-outs for sick individuals more info - doctors, nurses, assume care of several surrounding blocks of your neighborhood if facilities not available / establish communication with medical personnel.
